Afton Oaks, a subdivision of more than 500 homes, is located just inside the 610 Loop across from the Galleria. Originally, the neighborhood was predominantly comprised of ranch-style brick homes built in the 1950s. However, now everywhere you look, there are new homes in the neighborhood. Buyers are also updating older homes in order to accomplish a newer look and make it their own.
There are grand and majestic trees along the curving streets and the pedestrian friendly divided esplanade on Newcastle adds to the established feel of the neighborhood. Bounded on the north by Westheimer, on the south by the Southwest Freeway, on the west by Loop 610, and on the east by Mid Lane, it has a close-in location. The neighborhood’s proximity to Highland Village and Galleria shops and its location to neighboring entertainment venues, have made it popular choice with buyers. The residents of Afton Oaks are a congenial mix of young professionals and families with children at one end of the spectrum to retired owners on the other, and the area boasts of an active civic club.
Afton Oaks’ generous lot sizes – ranging from a low of just under 7,000 square feet to over 16,000 square feet in some instances – have added to its attraction for builders and buyers desiring close-in new construction. Even so, many of the original properties possess those timeless features that buyers prize, including hardwood floors, built-ins and traditional architecture.
Its neighbor directly to the east is West Lane Place, which is a small community of several u-shaped streets anchored by Mid Lane, which continues from Westheimer to Richmond Avenue.
This area has been almost completely transformed from its former incarnation as a neighborhood of low-slung one story homes and mid-century apartment buildings. Now, it’s an oasis of luxury townhomes and
freestanding garden homes, many in gated enclaves.
