HUNTERS CREEK VILLAGE is an incorporated suburban community covering approximately two square miles just south of Interstate Highway 10 in west Houston abutting two other of the popular “Memorial Villages” – Hedwig Village and Piney Point. Earlier in the area’s history, German farmers settled in the vicinity and established sawmills to cut local timber.
Large tracts of what was once farm and timberland ultimately became divided to single family residential lots nestled among the pines, oaks, and cherry laurels. And in December 1954, the community incorporated with a mayor-alderman city government to protect itself from quickly approaching development as Houston grew. They enacted strict zoning restrictions allowing for only single-family homes and townhomes, with a very limited commercial zone available.
Lot sizes usually start around one-half acre as required by a city ordinance. Most of the homes were built in the 1960s, although there are many being torn down and replaced with beautiful new custom homes.
Most of Hunters Creek Village is north of the Buffalo Bayou and that portion is served by the Spring Branch Independent School District, while the portion south of the Buffalo Bayou is served by the Houston Independent School District. There are also a number of distinguished private schools in the area. TAKS scores of all the schools in the neighborhood are well above the state averages, adding to its esteemed list of amenities.
Residents in Hunters Creek Village benefit not only from their own elected mayor-alderman system, zoning ordinances and tax rate, but also from the excellent Memorial Villages Police Department and equally regarded Village Fire Department. The fire department also provides ambulance services.
