River Oaks

Nestled in the heart of Houston is River Oaks. This elegant, architecturally pleasing subdivision is highly recognized by the string of mansions that line the various streets and boulevard of this well respected community. Home to many CEOs, board directors, and entrepreneurs, it has earned the reputation of being one of Houston’s and the Southwest’s most exclusive neighborhoods.

It was developed in the early 1920s by William Hogg and his associate, Hugh Potter. The residential area measures approximately 1,200 acres. This beautiful tract of land offers shady boulevards, spacious, meticulously landscaped lawns and breathtaking bayou views. Strong ordinances and deed restrictions enforced by the River Oaks Property Owners maintain the elegance and grace of this neighborhood.

It is bordered by Buffalo Bayou to the north, Westheimer to the south, Shepherd Drive to the east and East Briar Hollow Lane to the west. It is just four miles from the Central Business District. This “close in” location provides easy access to Greenway Plaza, the Galleria, various museums, theaters, and cultural events.

Traditional architecture prevails in River Oaks. In fact, many homes were designed by nationally recognized architects of the era, such as John F. Staub and Birdsall Briscoe. One such home, “Bayou Bend” was built by William Hogg’s sister, Ima. She later donated the magnificent Greek
Revival property to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston along with its extensive collection of early American furnishings and antiques. Another Staub-designed home, “Rienzi” was similarly donated to MFAH along with its art and furnishings by Carroll and Harris Masterson, III in the 1990s. Yet another well known neighborhood landmark is the River Oaks Country Club. This gracious, highly recognized club is noted for its famous River Oaks Tennis Tournament and the ornamental light presentation during the
holiday season.

This premiere neighborhood offers a variety of homes that fulfill the diverse needs of its residents from older homes found on smaller plats of land to recent or new construction and grand estates that sprawl over several acres. Whatever the case, with its rich history and beauty, residents enjoy a comfortable, gracious lifestyle unequaled in the Houston area.
