Rice Military

Rice Military, one of Houston’s most historic places, is located near Memorial Park southeast of the Westcott and Washington intersection. It is bordered by Washington Avenue on the north, Buffalo Bayou to the south, Shepherd Drive to the east, and Westcott to the west.

The name, Rice Military, references William Marsh Rice who once owned a large tract of the area. In 1923, Mike and Will Hogg, sons of a former governor of Texas, purchased 875 acres of Camp Logan, the former U.S. Army camp, plus additional adjoining acreage from the family of William Marsh Rice, to develop home sites. The Hoggs ultimately developed their subdivision (River Oaks) south of the bayou and sold their acreage at cost to the city of Houston for Memorial Park.

Home owners in Rice Military enjoy immediate proximity to Memorial Park and downtown Houston. Known for its eclectic architecture, the area predates its neighbor, Camp Logan, by eight years. Many of Rice Military’s small bungalows and shotgun houses have been replaced by numbers of skyline-lancing townhomes of distinguished Contemporary design.

Both Camp Logan and Rice Military present an ideal location for young professionals and older individuals who value the nearness of the theatres, museums, and the fine shopping and dining. They welcome the exchange of lawn maintenance for the jogging trails and tranquil setting of Memorial Park and suburban sprawl for diversity and urban personality. Most of all, home owners appreciate the neighborhood feel while staying in touch with the vibrant energy of the city.
